DBT is an evidence based talking therapy originally developed from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help people manage intense emotions, impulsivity, and self harm. It focuses on teaching practical skills in four core areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT is a heavily skills based therapy that operates on the philosophy of balancing seemingly opposite ideas: Acceptance (accepting yourself exactly as you are in the moment) and Change (making the necessary changes to progress towards your goals) The four primary pillars include : Mindfulness: Focusing our attention on the present moment to observe and accept thoughts without judgement. Distress Tolerance: Learning how to survive and manage crisis without resorting to harmful or impulsive behaviours. Emotion Regulation: Understanding, being aware of, and managing intense emotions to regain control. InterpersonalÂ
Effectiveness: A set of skills to help the individual to communicate clearly, set boundaries and manage conflict in relationships.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured goal oriented talking therapy. It teaches you to identify and challenge negative thoughts to change how you feel and behave. Rather than focusing on the past, CBT centres on your current challenges to break vicious cycles. CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and actions are all interconnected. A negative interpretation of an event can trap you in a negative loop. CBT helps you objectively evaluate your thoughts and replace unhelpful patterns with realistic ones. It is highly evidence based and commonly used to treat the following: Depression, Anxiety Disorders and phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, (OCD) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Eating Disorders, Chronic Pain or Insomnia.Â
You work as a team with your therapist to set specific goals and track progress Often completing homework such as keeping a thought diary or practising new coping strategies in your life
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Nightmares (CBT-N) is a an effective, short-term therapy to reduce the frequency and intensity of nightmares. It is a structured approach using a range of techniques to change the nightmare cycle.
CBT-N begins with education on sleep and nightmares, including information on what causes nightmares, habits that may be maintaining them, and support around making changes to your sleep routines. Therapy for nightmares then involves identifying and resolving themes in your nightmares by rescripting the nightmares and practicing imagery rehearsal.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a structured, evidence-based treatment designed to address insomnia by focusing on how a person’s thoughts and behaviours influence their sleep. It is the leading recommended treatment for insomnia as it targets the underlying causes of insomnia, helping individuals develop long-term strategies for better sleep.
CBT-I begins with education on how sleep works and what habits might be interfering with it, such as irregular routines or activities that overstimulate the mind before bed. It helps individuals identify and change negative patterns that interfere with healthy sleep.
Insomnia therapy also involves addressing negative or anxious thoughts about sleep. People often feel stuck in a cycle of worrying about not sleeping, which makes the problem worse. CBT-I helps individuals recognise these thought patterns and replace them with more realistic, calming perspectives. Relaxation techniques are also introduced, to reduce the physical and mental tension that often contributes to sleeplessness. These methods help create a more peaceful state before bedtime, making sleep come more naturally.
This is an arts therapy which integrates the mind and body. By combining bodily movement, rhythm and spoken words, it allows individuals to express complex emotions, process trauma and improve overall wellbeing. Key principles and benefits are the following: Mind – Body Integration: it operates on the principle that movement reflects inner thoughts, feelings and past experiences. Non Verbal Expression: It provides an outlet for emotions that are difficult to articulate through traditional talking therapy alone. Who it helps: Effective for treating anxiety, depression, trauma and relationship issues as well as supporting those with learning difficulties or physical discomfort.Â
Sessions are highly individualised and typically involve 1 A verbal check in to establish a safe therapeutic relationship. 2 Creative exploration of themes through movement, dance and body mapping. 3 Verbal reflection to integrate the physical experience into daily life.
Psychodynamic Therapy is an in depth talk based psychotherapy that explores how your unconscious mind, past experiences, and childhood relationships shape your current behaviours and emotions. The goal is to bring hidden feelings into your conscious awareness so you can resolve deep seated issues and make long lasting changes. The core concepts are :The Unconscious Mind holds painful feelings, hidden memories, and unresolved conflicts that are kept out of conscious awareness, yet still influence your actions. Early Childhood Experiences: The idea that formative relationships and events early in life lay the foundation for how you relate to others as an adult.
Defense Mechanisms: The unconscious sometimes harmful mental tricks you use to protect yourself from uncomfortable emotions (like denial, avoidance, or projection) Using free association and encouraging you to speak openly and freely about whatever comes to mind to uncover hidden thoughts. Pattern Detection: Helping you to identify recurring, unhealthy behaviours and emotional responses.Â
Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) This is an extensively researched, evidence based psychotherapy designed to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories. It uses guided bilateral stimulation ( like side to side eye movements or gentle hand tapping to reduce emotional intensity of distressing experiences, allowing them to be stored properly. Developed originally to treat post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) the structured treatment is highly effective and endorsed by major health bodies like the World Health Organisation. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses less on the details of the trauma and more on how the brain processes the memory. The treatment follows a structured eight phase approach. Assessment and Preparation: You and your therapist establish coping strategies and a safe emotional baseline. Bilateral Stimulation: While focusing on a target traumatic memory, you follow a moving stimulus with your eyes, or use alternating sound/taps. Reframing: The dual attention process helps your brain naturally integrate fragmented memories and replace negative beliefs with positive ones. A standard course of treatment lasts between 6 and 12 sessions. EMDR is also used to treat anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, chronic pain and addiction
Drama therapy is an active experiential form of psychotherapy that uses theatre and dramatic techniques such as role play, storytelling, improvisation and puppetry to help individuals process emotions, heal from trauma and practise new behaviours in a safe fictional space.
Because it emphasises embodying experiences rather than just talking about them, it offers a distinct alternative to traditional talk therapy. By projecting their feelings onto a character mask or story, individuals can explore painful or complex life experiences indirectly making it easier for people to identify the underlying emotion.
Psychodrama operates on the premise that emotional wounds sustained in action require healing through action. It is used to externalise internal experiences, allowing for individuals to release pent up emotions, process grief and resolve relationship conflicts. Because it focuses on right-brain processing, sensory experience, and bodily movements psychodrama is increasingly recognised as a highly effective, alternative treatment for trauma and PTSD.Â
Individuals, are encouraged to act out scenarios they struggle with in real life, allowing them to practise and rehearse healthier responses.
Drama therapy helps with trauma and PTSD, Anxiety and Depression, Social and Behavioural Issues and Addiction and Recovery.

Hypnosis is a state of highly focused concentration, deep relaxation and heightened suggestibility. Guided by a trained practitioner it allows the individual to quiet everyday distractions and become more open to suggestions designed to improve behaviours, manage pain or reduce stress. How it works The Hypnotic State: It is not mind control or a magical trance. Brain imaging shows that hypnosis decreases activity in the brain's salience network (which scan for danger) while boosting connectivity in areas responsible for focus and inner awareness.
